Podcast05: Reflections on our 40 Day Evening Technology Use Fast and Digital Discipline

In this podcast, Shelly and Wesley Fryer share the genesis, goals, and results of our 40 day evening technology use fast that we completed together in the closing weeks of 2006. This was a very positive experience which drew us closer together as a couple and a family, and made us more aware of our abiding need to have digital discipline as we intentionally decide how to spend our time in the evenings together.

Nice job, Wes and Shelly. Appreciate you each sharing your thoughts and recognizing how important this was to your lives.

Now that we have a treadmill, it is great to do two things at once: listen to podcasts & have a workout at the same time!

[...] Be aware that blogging and blog reading can be addictive. Get plenty of sleep. Talk frequently to your spouse and kids. Live with “digital discipline,” resolving to be intentional in the times you dedicate to blogging and surfing. If you’re spending too much time blogging and surfing (or just about anything else,) consider a fast. [...]

Finally got a chance to listen to this (as I sit on my bed beside my wife who has her laptop running as well!).

Very timely as we had 3 couples share in church some very candid thoughts on marriage.

    My heart is being challenged.

[...] I was glad to learn about TV Turn-Off Week April 23-29 (starting tomorrow) sponsored by the Center for Screen-Time Awareness, via this post from Jeff Utech’s wife. Since I took a 40 day evening technology fast back in November/December I’m going to pass on this week’s TV Turnoff campaign, but I wish everyone who is participating well in the endeavor. The goal of becoming more intentional about our consumption of digital content (which comes to us via various screens) is a GREAT one. [...]

I like the idea! I need spiritual discipline, maybe that includes digital discipline. This is a thought to chew the cud on for awhile. Very insightful - thank you!! I find Wes posts great to listen to from my aggregator and find that such a polite thing to do that I’m trying to include Talkr in mine….I’m yet unsuccessful. I persist!
